Because these dresses tend to be classier, the necklines are much higher than, say, club dresses. This is a type of dress that can be worn with every age of woman but usually work better with women who are thinner.

There are some with beaded bodices and a light beading across the dress itself, making it look very much like a dress for nighttime.
Even white underskirts are sometimes used with white up along the neckline to offset the black.
There is a big trend toward feathered dresses or all over sequined dresses. They are playful and are designed for a young woman in mind.
For older women, there are longer hemlines and higher necklines, along with long sleeves and more sedate looks.
These dresses can be very expensive, in the range of $500 or more or can be as inexpensive as $50. It all depends on the designer and on what went into making the little black dress.
