Homecoming Dresses for You or your Child

The dress you choose for homecoming is a once in lifetime purchase that can be everything from playful to formal.

Homecoming dresses have changed a lot over the years and most homecoming dresses are short these days. Many are strapless or have small spaghetti straps and the most commonly chosen colors of late are metallics, black, white, red or black and white. Most are playful with flared skirts and matching shoes.

Purples and jewel-toned blues are also common colors for homecoming dresses.

Again, most are strapless or have a single strap crossing up and over the shoulder for a dramatic look. Such dresses are also flared most of the time but a thinner girl could get away with some of the hip-hugging looks of more snuggly fitting dresses.

There is a lot of lace on today's homecoming dresses - mostly patterned lace overlays over a solid colored background reminiscent of the dresses of the eighties with the exception that most of today's dresses are strapless.

The flare of the dress is similar to eighties party dresses, however. Most dresses are solid or have patterned overlays but a few have animal print stripes very popular these days. Some dresses have "bling" on them in the form of diamond broaches in the center between the breasts.

There is a trend toward orange and coral-colored dresses in today's homecoming dresses as well. Such dresses are often made from satin and, like other homecoming styles of this era; they are strapless or have a single strap and are gathered to make an especially flouncy skirt.

Special bras are required to wear these styles of dresses. Regular strapless bras or bras with deep plunging center fronts can keep a girl supported as she wears this lovely strapless gown. Regular bras would just look awkward with these dress styles.

There are interesting dresses in which large rosettes form the skirt of the dress. The large rosettes are usually in red or pink and make the skirt have somewhat of a square look. There is a lot of fabric to these dresses so they may be a bit heavy to wear.

As mentioned, black and white are really popular matches and some include a splash of red. There can be a white bodice, a black flared skirt and a red belt or just a black and white ensemble with black on one half of the dress and white on the other half of the dress. It gives the dress an elegant air typical of the occasion.

Beading is found on the bodice and somewhat on the skirt of many dresses and the color of the dress doesn't seem to matter. Most beading is white but some have black beading on a white fabric, which looks really elegant. Layering of fabrics on the skirt is also very popular, which different colors or the same color on each layer. Some have a bottom layer of black lace, which is very provocative.

The style of homecoming dresses these days is different from the days when all dresses were long. The dresses are short, flirty and fun to wear.
