Evening Dresses

Evening dresses and gowns are those dresses you wear for an evening on the town, dancing or just schmoozing with others at a fancy soire. They come in all colors and are generally floor-length. They come in all necklines, from strapless to one strap to spaghetti straps to those with sleeves or are just sleeveless.

The necklines of evening dresses and gowns are generally not plunging, although many show enough cleavage to be considered sexy and delicious to look at.

The colors are all over the map, from black to metallic to jewel tones and even pastels. Some come in a large print but most are solid and are made from jersey, other knits, sheer fabrics with underlays, and even taffeta.

While almost all of these dresses have floor length hemlines, a few have slits going up the side of one or both legs or up the back to make them particularly sexy.

The shapes of these dresses can be of the mermaid style, have empire waistlines, regular waistlines or princess-line dresses.

The mermaid style works well for those women who are tall and thin as the dress hugs the body from the top of the dress to just above the knee. Such dresses leave nothing to the imagination so you need to wear appropriate underclothing and be thin enough not to have fat folds, which would show obviously when wearing the dress.

Evening dresses and gowns are designed to be extremely elegant and thus have sequins on many gowns and have elegant flowing skirts that hang to floor length or more. A few have trains that hang behind the gown that make things a bit complicated when you're trying to sit down or move around too much.

Sexy evening gowns are also possible. Some have ornate bodices that show skin in several places, leaving nothing to the imagination. You need to be tanned and have no tattoos in order to pull off a dress like that one.

The skirts can be body hugging and can reveal just about every curve a girl has but there are plenty of evening dresses and gowns that have wider, more flowing skirts more suitable for the woman with wider hips or thicker thighs.

Women who are thicker around the midline should avoid the large print of some of these dresses and should plan for an empire waist or a princess-line dress that doesn't emphasize the waist so much. The colors should be solid and you should stick to a dress that is black or jewel toned that emphasizes the neckline.

There is a strikingly large amount of this type of dress that comes in white. They tend not to look like wedding dresses because they are less ornate and tend to flow to the ground more like a nightgown than a wedding dress. They are differentiated from nightgowns, however, because of their fancy necklines, strapless looks and embellished necklines.

Even in white, evening dresses and gowns stand out as being the most elegant of dresses a woman can wear.
